Know the perils of flexi-working

The rise in short-term employment is creating serious legal risks for careless employers, writes Elaine O’Regan.

Fixed-term contracts are an increasingly popular option for cash-strapped employers unable to commit to permanent employment.

A report released last month by Grafton Recruitment revealed a 30 per cent rise in the number of temporary and contract positions placed with the group compared to August 2008.

Cathy McCorry, managing director of Grafton Recruitment in the Republic of Ireland, said the trend reflected the need, among employers, to control staff-related costs in a difficult trading environment.
