Frenchman Jerome Kerviel can claim pole position in the gallery of rogue traders, as his €5 billion trading losses at Societe Generale put the scale of activities of Nick Leeson, John Rusnak and others in the shade.

A top French banker was quick to brand the 31-year-old ‘‘a genius of fraud’’ last week, but Kerviel’s reckless trading was similar in many ways to what happened before at Barings and many other banks....
