Justice minister criticises McSharry debt comments

Justice minister Alan Shatter has said that Permanent TSB public interest director Ray MacSharry should give “serious consideration” to comments he made yesterday ruling out blanket debt forgiveness.

Justice minister Alan Shatter has said that Permanent TSB public interest director Ray MacSharry should give “serious consideration” to comments he made yesterday ruling out any blanket debt forgiveness in tackling the arrears crisis.

The former Fianna Fail finance minister told the Oireachtas finance committee that his bank would not engage in debt forgiveness, although it would consider debt writedowns on a case-by-case basis, it said.
