When it came to nominating a judge to the US Supreme Court last week, President George Bush followed strongly conservative rhetoric with more moderate action.

Bush has received enthusiastic support throughout his presidency from religious conservatives. Such activists regard shifting the balance of the Supreme Court in a rightward direction as one of their top priorities. The court rules on some of America's most divisive social issues including abortion, the death penalty and gay marriage.
