Judges Row: Called to order

Just as a row between the judiciary and the government looked as if it were about to get out of hand, the Chief Justice stepped in and calmed everybody down. John Burke reports.

It was a scuffle that nobody could win. Mr Justice Peter Kelly picked the fight with his claim that the government was slowly undermining judicial independence. However, many of the country's eminent judges were relieved when Susan Denham, the Chief Justice, stepped in to defuse the row.
