John Carthy’s sister to run in election

The sister of John Carthy, the man shot dead by gardai during the Abbeylara siege in 2000, is planning to stand as a candidate in the general election.

The sister of John Carthy, the man shot dead by gardai during the Abbeylara siege in 2000, is planning to stand as a candidate in the general election.

Marie Carthy confirmed that she was interested in standing in the new four-seater Longford-Westmeath constituency, on a human rights platform.

She said she would specifically campaign for those who ‘‘have been victimised, neglected and mistreated by various state institutions’’.
