However Joe Higgins fares in the European elections, Fingal is a stronghold for his Socialist Party. Two of the party’s three sitting councillors held seats in this area and Higgins raced ahead in yesterday’s count to reclaim a seat in the Castleknockward.

Higgins previously held a seat here, but was obliged to surrender it when elected to the Dáil in 2002.
