While the focus this weekend is on the collapsed pay talks, the reality for many private businesses is a fight for survival.

This was reflected in last week’s Central Statistics Office (CSO) figures which show unemployment at its worst for a decade.

The figures, released last Wednesday, show lay-offs now running at about 700 a week - mainly in the private sector.
