In 1963, JFK came across a 1908 memo from president Theodore Roosevelt concerning the speed at which Marines could then be expected to cover 50 miles on foot.

The White House publicised the discovery, and before long Americans everywhere were being challenged to hike 50 miles and prove themselves as fit as their forefathers.
