We emerged from the recession in Ireland back in the 1980s and 1990s a wiser bunch and we vowed to never let what happened then happen again.

One of the many wonderful things about a recession is that it offers society a chance to change - and maybe even to change for the better. Remember the Wall Street crash of 1929, and how everything changed after that? How the world no longer tolerated rampant and unchecked greed (sorry, capitalism)?
