For those nearing retirement, a pall of uncertainty hangs over the benefits they can expect from the state in the coming years.

Earlier this year, the government mooted plans to change the pensions environment dramatically, including a hike in the retirement age.

However, changes in broader pension policy and their impact on future generations have been overshadowed by a more immediate debate, with older people fearing that the state will cut benefits for existing pensioners...
