Despite the rhetoric and hand wringing over the incursion into Gaza, the question still stands: what is Israel trying to achieve?

From a security standpoint, it revolves around two salient objectives - demolishing or degrading Hamas’s ability to function before a possibly more sympathetic US administration is in place at the end of this month, and directly impeding Hamas’s development of a tunnel network allowing unimpeded access to rockets and munitions from Egypt....
