Is Facebook losing its cool?

Many Facebook users now consider it a time-consuming chore and worry about the privacy issues. Is it facing a backlash, asks Peter Hanrahan

Last month, Facebook, the all conquering social networking juggernaut, which has a reported two million Irish accounts, was forced into denying that it had recently lost six million users.

That claim, which was made by the website Inside Facebook, was subsequently debunked. But Facebook now faces unprecedented pressure, both from its own success and from quickly adapting competitors, such as Twitter and Google +.

In some cases, that pressure has resulted in people closing their accounts.
