Irish soprano Celine Byrne, who won the Maria Callas Grand Prix in Athens on St Patrick’s Day, said she set her heart on the competition - one of the most prestigious in the world - because she was disappointed with her performance in the Veronica Du
The singer, who lives in Naas, Co Kildare, and tours extensively with the Three Tenors, won the main prize of €9,000 before a jury that included sopranos Teresa Berganza and Ileana Cotrubas, both contemporaries of Callas. Byrne performed arias by Mozart, Weber and Catalani.
