Former European Commission interpreter Fr Patrick Daly has been appointed secretary general of COMECE, the organisation of the European Catholic Bishops, based in Brussels.

Daly, 61, who grew up in Sligo, did a PhD in mediaeval history at Louvain in Belgium. Between 1981 and 1987, he worked as an interpreter on the staff of the European Commission. He studied for the priesthood at the Beda College in Rome and was ordained in 1991. He formerly...
