Irish hostage safe after Algerian siege

UPDATE: An Algerian military operation is under way at a gas facility where hostages are being held, the British Foreign Office has told the BBC.

The Irish national who had been held hostage in the Amenas gas-field compound has made contact with his family.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has said the man is understood to be safe and well and no longer a hostage.

An Algerian military operation has been under way at the gas facility near In Amenas that kidnappers occupied on Wednesday.
