In February, Minister for Enterprise Micheál Martin and the IDA got a rude surprise. The State Aid Directorate in the European Commission (EC) told them that approval would not be forthcoming for a grant to Intel towards its €1.6 billion investment in a new wafer fabrication facility in Leixlip, Co Kildare.
The government had no choice but to withdraw its request for clearance and abandon the plan to subsidise Intel.
