Ireland's opportunity to shine in the international arena

Taking the reins of the OSCE this year and the presidency of the EU next year will give Ireland the chance to show its many strengths on the global stage.

Over the next 18 months, Ireland will assume the leadership of two international organisations which, between them, span most of the northern hemisphere.

The first of those is the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the largest and most successful regional security body, stretching from Vancouver to Vladivostok.

Our year-long chairmanship, which began on January 1, will swiftly be followed by Ireland's presidency of the EU in the first half of 2013.
