Ireland’s dry white season

Water shortages and restrictions are continuing to cause havoc in homes and businesses across Ireland, leaving the public angry at the government’s handling of the crisis. John Burke and Nicola Cooke report

Burst pipes and severe water restrictions caused serious disruption to businesses and householders last week as a result of the thaw, with demand outstripping supply and concerns being expressed about ageing water infrastructure.

The capital was one of the worst areas affected, with the loss midweek of over 130million litres of water in storage. Dublin City Council was forced to cut off supplies from 6pm on December 30 to 2pm on New Year’s Eve.
