The European Court of Justice will give judgment on Thursday week in a case brought by the European Commission against Ireland for allowing ‘‘widespread’’ pollution of water supplies.
The commission took the infringement case in June 2005 because of what it said was Ireland’s failure to comply with a 1980 directive on the protection of groundwater.
