Investors taken by surprise by last week's news that Dell is in advanced talks to go private had every chance to see the development coming.

The struggling PC maker's founder and chief executive, Michael Dell, expressed an interest in taking his company private more than two years ago. Predictably, wealthy private equity investors looking for cheap assets have taken the bait.
