Intellectual Property: The changing trade mark landscape

With the trade mark registration system set to change in Europe, Laura Myles of TradeSecrets Limited outlines some of the key changes coming in.

Draft legislation recently published by the European Commission aims to modernise and improve the current system for registering trade marks in Europe. Since 1996, it has been possible to file a single European Community Trade Mark (CTM) application which, if granted, would extend trade mark protection across all EU member states simultaneously.

The CTM system, administered by the Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market (OHIM) in Spain, exists alongside (and will continue to exist alongside)...
