Taoiseach Bertie Ahern warned EU Commission president José Manuel Barroso that Intel's expansion in Ireland carried “iconic status", and a refusal of grant aid would have “serious implications not just for Ireland but for the reputation of Europe".
In a letter to Barroso last December, Ahern said meetings between the government and the commission about aid for Intel's €1.6 billion development in Kildare “did not result in any significant progress'‘.
