Anybody who has caught a train in recent weeks will be familiar with the terms “low rail adhesion” and “wheel slip”. That is the fancy name that Irish Rail, and other train companies, give to the problem of leaves on the track during the autumn months that force trains to a crawl.

The problem is blamed for many of the current delays that are afflicting commuter services into Dublin in particular....
