Insurers will see penalty point details for first time

Drivers who failed to disclose details of their penalty points when taking out motor insurance policies face premium hikes of up to 25 per cent by the end of this year.

Drivers who failed to disclose details of their penalty points when taking out motor insurance policies face premium hikes of up to 25 per cent by the end of this year.

Until now, most insurance companies had no way of checking to see how many penalty points a driver had accumulated. But by the end of this year insurers will have access to the national vehicle driver file, a confidential database showing drivers’ penalty points.
