The amount of insurance business written in Ireland fell by more than €10 billion last year, according to figures from the Financial Regulator.
Total gross premiums were €35.9 billion in 2008, down from €46.15 billion a year earlier.
Almost 80 per cent of the total gross premium income - €28.5 billion - came from life companies, with the remaining €7.4 billion being generated by non-life companies.
