Inquiry sought into brutal procedure of childbirth

Survivors of Symphysiotomy (SOS) will call on the government to establish an independent inquiry into the brutal form of childbirth surgery, following publication of a hard hitting report this week.

Survivors of Symphysiotomy (SOS) will call on the government to establish an independent inquiry into the brutal form of childbirth surgery, following publication of a hard hitting report this week. An estimated 1,500 symphysiotomies were carried out on women in the Republic between 1944 and 1984.

The report will conclude that the operations were an abuse of medical authority and a violation of human rights.
