Wanton damage has been done to the institutions of the state in the crisis over sex abuse and Mr A over the last few days. The government and the Oireachtas have engaged in what is little more than a stunt to assuage public outrage. The Supreme Court has also devised a response to that outrage, in deciding that it is acceptable to imprison a person who commits an offence that does not exist.
