Business conditions in the Irish construction industry improved sharply in July, according to the latest edition of the Ulster Bank Construction Purchasing Managers' Index.

The index, which is seasonally adjusted and designed to measure the overall health of the sector, remained well above the 50.0 no-change mark at 55.6.

However growth in total activity was slightly less marked than in June, when the headline index stood one point higher.
