Independent radio producers are lobbying the communications department for more funding to develop their fledgling industry.

They are calling for a quadrupling of a planned €500,000 allocation to independent radio commissions at RTE, which is part of the proposed Broadcasting Bill. RTE has been commissioning independent TV programmes for 15 years, but has made almost all its radio programmes internally. The bill will mark the first time radio has been singled out.
