Hybrid car sales have shot up this year, showing that Irish people will do their bit for the environment, given the chance.

Toyota has sold 133 Prius models so far this year, against 57 in the same period in 2006, while the more expensive Lexus models, RX400h and GS450h, found 113 new owners.

This equates to an impressive 23 per cent of the 489 Lexus sales in January 2007.
