The International Monetary Fund has backed the European Central Bank's plan to intervene on secondary bond markets in a bid to ease the debt crisis in the euro area.
The IMF's head Christine Lagarde said in a statement that her organisation was ready to co-operate with the scheme "within our frameworks". Her comments were reported by Bloomberg News.
She called the programme an "important step" for the euro area.
