When Oliver Stone's $160m biopic of the 4th century BC king Alexander was re leased in the US, the savage reaction from the critics left its leading man “devastated". The long-gestating film (Stone had tried to make it in '91 with Val Kilmer, and in '96 with Tom Cruise) had become a labour of love for everyone involved.

Colin Farrell had, he's keen to point out, put his heart and soul into the part.
