Taoiseach Enda Kenny once compared a cabinet reshuffle to ''when the man appears on the sideline with the numbers flashing.

As manager of the Fine Gael team, he had to switch around players who were a liability, and take off others to make way for energetic substitutes. His team are currently a few goals down. And the final whistle is about 20 months away.
