Huge cost puts paid to home energy scheme

A state scheme to upgrade the energy efficiency of 1.6 million homes has been shelved due to the €35 billion cost.

The aim had been to allow householders to pay for energy efficient insulation, windows and solar panels with the savings they would make on their fuel bills.

But research commissioned by the government found that the savings householders made would not be enough to repay the retrofitting cost.
