The Health Service Executive (HSE) has begun legal proceedings against five nursing homes since last year, according to figures released to a Fine Gael TD last week.

The HSE began legal action against nursing homes in Meath and Wexford in 2004, while action is still pending against homes in Dublin, Kildare and Cork.

The homes in Meath and Wexford closed voluntarily before any court hearings had taken place. Neither has reopened since.
