Dr Barry White, the national director of clinical programmes at the Health Service Executive, is stepping down from his post and returning to clinical practice.
White, a consultant haematologist, was seconded from his position at St James's Hospital in Dublin to take up the HSE role in 2009.
White was charged with directing major clinical reform programmes and standardising best practice nationally.
