HSA crackdown aims at workplace safety

The Health & Safety Authority is intent on reducing violations in the Irish workplace but some critics believe its tactics are placing an undue strain on employers. June Caldwell reports

Amajor crackdown on health and safety violations wi l l see the Health & Safety Authority inspect some 13,500 workplaces around Ireland this year.

Last year, 50 people died in workplaces. Although this is 20 less than in 2003, it still represents a death at work every week in Ireland. So far this year,12 people have died compared to nine over the same period last year.
