The minister for health at the time, Michael Noonan, famously took legal advice to defend the case. The blood board was found to be at fault and Noonan has since expressed regret at his handling of the case.

Ireland’s Hepatitis C Compensation Tribunal was established in 1995 in an effort to address the needs of people who were infected by contaminated blood supplied by state agencies. But the costs associated with the tribunal are soaring.
