How the government finally grasped the X nettle

Now, after 21 years, the Oireachtas looks set to legislate in accordance with the Supreme Court ruling on the X case. Pat Leahy and Niamh Connolly report.

Government press officer Tom McLoughlin peered anxiously out at the press corps from behind a large screen, glancing frequently at his watch.

Last Wednesday morning's press conference was being timed for broadcast on RTE television, and Morning Ireland was also preparing to tune in live. The saga of the government's efforts to legislate for the X case had missed enough deadlines, and they wanted to hit this one.
