Former justice minister Alan Shatter has had a hidden influence on Fine Gael’s European election campaign by personally giving more than 47,000 new citizens the right to vote.

Although the controversy over his resignation and severance package caused difficulties for Shatter’s party, the immigrant community has an entirely different view of him, due to his role in granting them citizenship.
