Paul Henry had the good fortune to be the right man in the right place at precisely the right time. Belfast-born, he studied there and in Paris, and enjoyed success as an illustrator in London, but by 1910 he had yet to encounter his muse. Accomplished as his early work is, none of it has the vigour or the passion that consumed him when he travelled to Achill Island that year.
