Hospitals are struggling to get even one applicant for some consultant posts since the Minister for Health, James Reilly, announced a unilateral salary cut of 30 per cent for new consultants.
The Irish Hospital Consultants Association (IHCA) warned that the situation would further deteriorate because doctors in training are leaving in greater numbers due to frustration over their working hours, while specialists abroad are less attracted to posts here.
