Hospitals in the west and north-west are overspending their budgets by as much as 20 per cent, internal financial reports on the health service reveal.

The finance division of the Health Service Executive (HSE) was hugely concerned at the overspending and put the hospitals under considerable pressure to reduce their deficits last year, according to internal HSE reports released to The Sunday Business Post under the Freedom of Information Act.
