The number of cases of the MRSA superbug in Ireland has been under-reported for years because many hospitals opted out of the MRSA reporting scheme, The Sunday Business Post has learned.
The Health Service Executive (HSE) has confirmed that although MRSA recording began in 1999, hospitals were not legally required to send in MRSA figures until 2004.
“Up until then, reporting MRSA was voluntary,” said a HSE spokesman.
