The public must not be fooled into thinking that hospital ‘reconfiguration’ will save money for the exchequer, a specialist at South Tipperary General Hospital in Clonmel has warned.

Consultant surgeon Peter Murchan, who spoke at the annual conference of the Irish Hospital Consultants Association (IHCA) yesterday, said that downgrading hospitals was ‘‘an easy flag to fly during a financial crisis.
