Phil Hogan eased in, but some of his future colleagues are in danger, writes Shona Murray.

The event never lived up to the billing. Phil Hogan eased his way through the nomination process as Europe’s new Commissioner for Agriculture, batting away questions and criticisms with some ease.

Despite all the hype about potential stumbling blocks, just 10 MEPs rejected his candidacy in a secret ballot. Not for the first time in Hogan’s career, the man known as Enda Kenny’s political enforcer came out on top – and smiling.
