Former minister Phil Hogan is facing competition for the key EU post of Agriculture Commissioner after Romania renominated its current commissioner for the role.
Romania is seeking to have Dacian Ciolos, who oversaw the renegotiation of the Common Agricultural Policy, reappointed to serve a second term as Agriculture Commissioner.
An EU source said that Romania did not want a repeat of what happened in 2005, when it was given the post of Commissioner for Multilingualism.
