Following its construction in 1848, Queen Victoria described Balmoral Castle as "my dear paradise in the Highlands" in her personal journal; it's not hard to see why.
Built on the site of an older 15th century castle, Balmoral is in an idyllic location around an hour and a half drive west of Aberdeen in the north-east of Scotland, near the picturesque town of Ballater.
