High-profile backbenchers elect to throw in the towel

The announcement by one of Fianna Fail’s more ambitious TDs, Jim Glennon, that he was bowing out of politics sparked a wave of soul-searching by backbenchers about their role in the Dail.

Glennon, a former rugby international who was capped six times for Ireland, and later coached and managed the Leinster senior team, last week insisted his decision was for personal and family reasons. The Dublin North TD follows another first-time deputy and sportsman, Wexford TD and former senior hurling manager Tony Dempsey, who will not contest the next election. Neither TD was viewed as being in a vulnerable seat.
